Council say new summer beach hours postponed another year !!
PLEASE READ AND SHARE WIDELY
Two separate points:
1. The new Dog Policy which comes into force on 1 July includes a region wide summer time and season rule
on those beaches that currently have a time and season rule: "Dogs prohibited 10am to 5pm from Labour
Weekend to end of February" - that rule cannot be changed so there is absolutely NO REASON why it should
be delayed until October 2014. It would be easy to paste this information on beach signs over the old
times as Council has done in the past.
2. The Hearings Panel were trying to be as fair as possible to dog owners. We were there at the final
deliberations of the panel and members of the panel felt that some Local Boards may have beaches or
other areas where they might be able to offer more off leash access. This was one of the reasons they
asked for LBs to do a review of their access rules (in the policy these are listed as on leash, off
leash, prohibited and designated dog exercise areas) - NOT summer time and season rule because as
stated in 1. above this is already part of the new Auckland Dog Policy.
Any LB that proposes a change would have to publicly notify the change and call for submissions.
However, these reviews will take some time and in our view there is absolutely NO REASON why the
summer time and season rule should be postponed until summer 2014/2015.
A delay of bringing in the Summer Time and Season Rule is OUTRAGEOUS AND WE ARE TOTALLY CONVINCED
THAT IT IS NOT WHAT THE HEARINGS PANEL INTENDED.
We all worked so hard for these new hours (10,000 submissions) so please write letters to papers,
phone or email Councillors (see link below) and protest loudly to express your anger at the new
"summer beach time and season rule" being delayed 2 years from the Dog Policy being passed by Auckland
Council !!
